Webhow do stumps form First, a crack will appear in the cliff due to erosion. This crack will expand into a cave as it expands. Over time this cave will grow until it erodes through the headlands and you are left with an arch. As the arch expands, the cliff gets too heavy to hold. This then causes the arch to collapse creating a stack.
